Library Program
We assert reading as a right in a country where it is still a privilege. Through support to 20 community libraries, this program aims to make books and reading more accessible to readers, especially young people. These small local libraries receive financial support, donations of books and technical support. They are most often run by groups of young people supported by the community, located in the marginal districts of the capital, in small towns in the provinces and in the countryside.
FOKAL has brought Haitian libraries into regional and international networks and supported strong participation in ALA, IFLA and ACURIL conferences.
Partnerships with Libraries without Borders (mobile library) and Littafcar (on-line information and training platform on French-language literature in Africa, Europe and the Caribbean and cooperation projects in Benin, Rwanda , Haiti and Belgium) demonstrated the leadership and ability to attract new funders to FOKAL. The Bibliotaptap bookmobile has been managed by FOKAL since 2015; the Katherine Dunham Cultural Center Library at Parc de Martissant has been operational since 2015.
